Paintings on Paper
Paintings on paper have specific qualities that can be strikingly different from those made on canvas or linen. The majority of my paintings on paper are made with the handmade Indian paper that I also use in my ink drawings. Each sheet of the 100% cotton paper is unique. In a very positive sense the surface is not uniform, and I willingly employ this attribute in my work. The surface of each sheet contains surprises: strands of cotton, clots of pressed and pulverized cloth, delicate almost fragile areas, creases and folds, irregular edges. I use the potentials inherent in the paper, playing both with and to them. As I paint the distinctiveness of each surface becomes apparent--taking the eye on a magical tour encompassing image and paper.
